Anime + Manga Backlog: The Great Wall of Manga

anime-manga-backlog-small.jpg

In the short time that Basugasubakuhatsu has been around, it seems the site has seen quite a bit of popularity. One of the perks of being a semi-popular anime site is that companies will occasionally send me their titles to review. Basugasubakuhatsu started off as an anime first impressions site, but I guess it’s more of a review-centric one now, at least, during the months that new anime aren’t starting in Japan.

Anyway, while I was out of town, I got a pretty huge care package from DrMaster Publications and CMX Manga. I’ve had a backlog of stuff to review for a while now (and I’ve been getting through it) but now the backlog is ridiculous.

I stacked all of the anime and manga that I haven’t reviewed yet, and it’s pretty much the Great Wall of China, except in anime and manga form. Some of these are my own purchases (Nodame Cantabile, Keroro Gunso, Niea under 7, Haibane Renmei) but most are review copies. Don’t forget, I also ordered those 10 DVDs from RightStuf not too long ago… Yikes.

Now I’m asking for your help. Is there anything in particular in this wall that you’d like to see reviewed? I’ll try and do the requests first if there are any. There are a few DVDs that I can’t quite review yet since I don’t have the previous ones in the sets. If you can’t make out what the titles are from the picture, lemme know and I’ll write them out. But that’d take about as long as writing a few reviews…

Spring 2007 Anime Preview: Part 4

This is the fourth and final part of my Spring 2007 anime preview. In it, I take a peek at Terra e…, Romeo x Juliet, Lovely Complex, Lucky Star and Kaze no Stigma.

Terra e… (To Terra)

to-terra.jpg

Terra e (or To Terra, or Towards the Terra) is a classic manga that was just recently released by Vertical Inc. They probably couldn’t have timed it better since the anime will surely spark interest in the manga too.

It looks like Terra e will be an old school sci-fi action anime. Hopefully there’ll be some new school hotness added too. The story has to do with psychic kids and the dream to return… to Terra. I’ll probably watch this because I’ll be reading the manga anyway. Plus the website’s graphics look way slick.

Spring 2007 Anime Preview: Part 3

Part 3 of my Spring 2007 anime preview contains facts (or made up lies) about sola, Princess Resurrection, Kono Aozora ni Yakusoku wo, THE SKULLMAN and Nagasarete Airantou. Can you separate the fact from fiction? I can’t!

sola

sola.jpg

At the time of me writing this, there isn’t a translation anywhere for the plot of sola, and I’m finding it hard to translate myself since the text on the website is embedded in the image instead of actual text. Here is what I got without using a dictionary (because I’m lazy):

Something about a first year high school student who is a boy who likes “the sky.” And ummm, then something about a present, and something something “gothloli.” Sounds interesting all right! I’m guessing “sola” is referring to the “sora” (sky) in the anime description. But I could be wrong.

Other than that, the character designs do look good, and anidb says it’s a collaboration between the writer(s?) of Kanon and Da Capo. I’ll be watching because it looks pretty for now.

Spring 2007 Anime Preview: Part 2

My Spring 2007 anime preview continues today with Idol Master Xenoglossia, CLAYMORE, Wellber no Monogatari ~Sisters of Wellber~, Darker Than Black – Kuro no Keiyakusha and Kamichama Karin. Get ready for pure speculation!

Idol Master Xenoglossia

idol-master-xenoglossia.jpg

Idol Master Xenoglossia is based on an idol simulation game where you train young girls to become pop idols. Hopefully this anime won’t be as bad as that other idol show, Lovedol… This one also includes mecha for some reason. Are Japanese people just randomly adding mecha to all shows now!?

I can’t see how this anime could be very good, but I might watch one episode to see how bad it is. Apparently DiGiKerot likes Idol Master enough to buy the super secret special edition

Spring 2007 Anime Preview: Part 1

It looks like it’s finally time for the Spring anime season previews. Or at the very least, it’s good to use as filler since I’ll be out of town for a week. For this preview, I take a look at Hitohira, Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann, Gegege no Kitaro, Hayate the Combat Butler and Seto no Hanayome.

Hitohira

hitohira.jpg

From the trailer that I watched, it looks like Hitohira is about some girl who can’t talk. I’m pretty sure “mute” and “can talk” are on the list of moe charm points, and this girl seems pretty moe to me. She seems to be pretty close to her friend (yuri!!!) who’ll probably help her to learn to speak up. The character designs look really cute, and the possible (only suggested?) yuri means I’ll be watching.

There’s also a Hitohira manga. Too bad it’s a seinen or I might be able to read it.

Comic Party Vol. 1: Party Time! – Manga Review

comic-party-cover.jpg

I recall watching the Comic Party anime a long time ago. It was about this guy who wanted to become the greatest doujinshi artist in the world! Or something like that. Recently I got me some Comipa manga from CPM, so here comes a review!

Legal Anime Download Service Review: ADV Universe

adv-universe.jpg

After doing a post on one of those direct download anime sites, I figured it’d be only fair to do some reviews of the sites that offer legal anime downloads. A few of these have popped up over the past few months, though not much has really been written about them.

Today I’ll look at ADV Universe. ADV Universe is ADV Films’ own anime download service. They offer DRM protected windows media files of their anime for download.

AnimeGround – Anime Direct Download Site Review

animeground.jpg

I’ve never really felt the need to sign up for a direct download anime site before. Bittorrent does just fine, and I don’t really like the thought of people actually profiting from fansubs. One of these sites, called AnimeGround, set up an account for me to try out, so I figured what the heck?

Super Crazy ADV Anime Sale at RightStuf!

dchsbx1.jpg

Remember that insane Geneon anime sale at Rightstuf a while back? Well, they’re sorta doing it again, but with ADV stuff now. You can get 10 ADV dvds for $50 or 25 for $100. That’s seriously cheap!

I have a weak will. Even though I have waaaayyyy too many anime dvds in my review queue as it is, I ordered this:

Cromartie is just a really fun series that I never saw all of. I would’ve ordered more Kino’s Travels, but the last volume was already sold out! Wandaba Style was an anime that I had started out really liking a lot, but then it got licensed and the fansubs stopped.

There’s a lot of good stuff, and it looks like it’s selling out quick. So hurry up! Here’s the official sale text from RightStuf:

ADV Abundance!

Heat up your March with an abundance of savings on selected fan favorites from ADV Films! From now until March 11, take your pick from our hit list of ADV titles and bulk up your personal collection!

Choose the deal that’s best for you:

  • Get 10 ADV titles for $50 (Use coupon code abundance10); OR
  • Get 25 ADV titles for $100 (Use coupon code abundance25)
  • Expires: March 11, 2007

And keep in mind that BOTH offers will net you FREE economy shipping to U.S. and Canadian destinations!

In addition to our standard restrictions*, this special event has a couple other rules to note:

  • To use these coupons, you cannot have any other items in your cart aside from items that qualify for the sale, PLUS you must have the exact number of items for the coupon you plan to use. (In other words: If you’re looking to purchase some other items in addition to your “Abundance” coupon selections, you’ll need to place a separate order.)

  • You cannot have duplicate items or multiple quantities of any single item in your cart. (This way no one customer can load up on all of the available inventory of a specific item. Fair for all and more savings to go around!)
