I think I covered Dokuro-chan in my Summer anime previews but the first episode wasn’t aired until recently. Ah, well, pi-piru-piru-piru pi-piru-pi, right?
This is technically the second season of Dokuro, though the first season was just a four episode OVA. I totally don’t remember what happened in the OVA story-wise, but this seems to be a continuation of whatever randomness did occur.
So basically, the premise is that Sakura is being protected by a time-traveling angel named Dokuro. She’s got a magical bat (that can do anything!) called “Excaliborg.” Technically, she’s supposed to protect him, but she doesn’t do a good job of it. Kinda like Pita-ten! Except Dokuro-chan routinely ends up killing Sakura. Luckily (?) for him, Dokuro just needs to recite the magical words “pi piru piru piru pi piru pi” to bring him back to life. And the vicious cycle continues.
The first “season” was an OVA, and this is a TV series, so there are some things right off the bat that the second season doesn’t do as well. First, the animation just isn’t as good. I’d go as far to say that some of the scenes just look strange. Also, there’s a bunch of scenes that are apparently too violent or racy to show, so they just show some apologetic text…
I really liked the first season of this anime (a lot of people didn’t), but I feel like the magic has worn off. The show really only has one joke, and that well seems to have run dry. It used to be funny seeing Dokuro chan kill Sakura and bring him back to life, but it’s so predictable now. It’s like in South Park where you expect to see Kenny die. The first few times it was funny, but it gets old quick.
I should also note that I watched this raw, so not all the jokes made it. Perhaps I need fansubs to fully enjoy it, but did understand quite a bit. The show wasn’t all that bad; it just couldn’t meet the very high expectations I had for it. Oh, and the “Sensitive Salaryman” show within a show is always funny.
I will say, however, that the OP totally rocks my socks. I remember getting the first OP stuck in my head forever. This one is a remixed version, and the voice actress for Dokuro seems to be having a lot of fun singing it. They changed the things that Dokuro-chan “does” to Sakura, for example, she “embarrasses” him and “defiles” him.
It’s kind of sad when the OP brings more entertainment than the actual show, though. I think I must’ve rewatched the OP like five times so far.
I really want to like Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-Chan, so I’ll probably continue watching in hopes that it’ll get better. I mean, it isn’t bad. It just isn’t as good as the OVA. And did I mention the OP rocks? I’ll probably keep watching just for that.
