So the Alien Nine manga trilogy ends. With a !?!?!? ending! Questions are answered, but the answers just raise more questions! Oh well, at least there’s a sequel, too.

Story:
Now that Kumi and Kasumi have become fused with aliens, Yuri is the only member of the team that’s still a normal human. The two feel as though it’s their duty to protect Yuri from meeting the same fate as they did. Too bad there’s a bunch of sunflower-looking aliens trying to take the school over by force!

Analysis:
Being the “final” volume, a lot of questions that were brought up in the previous chapters are answered. Sort of. At the end of each chapter, we see a part of a conversation between Kumi and the teacher, Hisakawa. Bit by bit, we start to understand what’s going on with the aliens invading Earth. Apparently humans are just really great hosts for aliens to symbiotically fuse with.

The situation is escalated to a climax when Yuri is brainwashed by a rival alien clan and her teammates have to rescue her and the entire school! It is pretty sweet seeing the weird special alien powers going against each other. I don’t remember the anime ever getting to this point. At the end, the crisis is averted, but there remains a teaser for the impending sequel.

Conclusion:
Overall, I really liked this series. The art was… unique. I wouldn’t say it’s bad, just different. And the alien drawings were a part of the reason I liked this series so much. They created this sort of universe within the series that was unique, to say the least. It was easy to identify and empathize with the characters, which made the story a lot more enjoyable to read. Did somebody say “Pathos?”

I’m kind of angry that the storyline wasn’t resolved more, though. It’s like the author decided to screw everyone over so he could make a sequel. Ah well, if the series sucked and got cancelled, it’d be even worse. Hopefully the “sequel” is as good as the rest of the series.

Many thanks to Central Park Media for sending me a review copy of Alien Nine Volume 3!

Yeah, I have a copy of the Shana novel, too. Expect a review on it in a couple of days or so.

@DiGiKerot: or maybe the items were so freaking awesome that they sold out instantly? Okay, so it’s probably not the most likely scenario…
