Sorta Weekly Poll of the Week: Anime Seiyuu, Authentic or Professional sounding?

First, the results of last week’s poll, How should Hantsuki be resolved?

Rika dies; Yuuichi is sad, yet he holds her memory dear to him 33% ( 1 )
Rika lives; Yuuichi and her get married like in the ED 0% ( 0 )
Rika dies; Yuuichi marries the chain-smoking nurse 0% ( 0 )
Rika lives; Yuuichi dies and Rika gets his heart (thanks, Elyscape!) 66% ( 2 )

Okay, so two of you said Yuuichi should die and Rika should get his heart. Now that’s a plot twist! I voted for Rika dies. Overall, kind of a sad turnout. That’s okay though, you can vote for the next poll!

Lemon Angel Project 52.jpg

So hashihime brought up a valid point while commenting on my post on Lemon Angel Project. While many find the voice of Tomo to be annoying, others find it to be more authentic than what a "professional" voice actor would provide. The job of a good voice actor should be to portray a character and their quirks. Maybe Tomo’s character just happens to be incredibly annoying (my opinion).

The questions really becomes this: Who can better portray a high school student – A professional voice actor, or an actual high school student?

I think that almost every time, a professional voice actor will win. This is simply because they’ve trained their voices for a living. Sure, a high school student will sound like a high school student, but when you throw them into a recording booth, things change. This is probably the reason that most children’s voices (in anime and also in american cartoons) are done by adults. Not to mention that kid’s voices only last so long until puberty happens.

To be fair, I’ll provide a counter example. In the original Peanuts specials, all of the children were voiced by real children. They sounded like real children, and I have to say that I do prefer the authentic sounding kids in Peanuts as opposed to the adult voices that I think the newer specials have.

Of course, you’re entitled to your opinion, so if you feel differently, then vote, and let me know why you feel that way.

Go to the forums, and vote on whether you like the authentic sound, or the Professional sounding seiyuu

Thanks for taking my opinion seriously. Unfortunately, in most cases, I would probably disagree with my own idea. Only in some cases does the untrained voice work as well as it does (IMHO) here. I’ve given a fuller reply in your forums. By the way: I absolutely loathe the real kids’ voices in the old Peanuts, lol.
