Coyote Ragtime Show Vol. 1: Fox Trot – Anime DVD Review

This is a milestone of sorts for Basugasubakuhatsu. It’s the first time I’ve reviewed a DVD of an anime series after doing a first impression review of the fansub. Pretty weird. I stopped watching the fansub after like the first episode anyway, so most of the DVD was new to me!

This is a milestone of sorts for Basugasubakuhatsu. It’s the first time I’ve reviewed a DVD of an anime series after doing a first impression review of the fansub. Pretty weird. I stopped watching the fansub after like the first episode anyway, so most of the DVD was new to me!

DVD Cover Blurb:
Insurrection will not be tolerated! To prove that point, the government has set a big, bad bomb to blast the planet Graceland right out of the sky. To make matters worse, The king is dead. However, before the Pirate King Bruce died, he hid billions in stolen loot on the doomed planet. Now, the galaxies most infamous criminal – a mystery man known only as “Mister” – has busted out of the slammer to get his hands on the booty before it’s too late!

Along with King Bruce’s daughter and his misfit band of “Coyotes,” Mister sidesteps government goons, dodges a hotty investigator on his tail and fends off a dozen Gothic Lolita androids programmed to kill, kill, KILL!

Analysis:
I don’t know what the government has against Elvis, but I guess blowing up a planet called Graceland is a necessary evil… Many of the feelings I had for my first impressions of this anime still hold true. It’s a total action show where you can let your brain just cruise along and enjoy. The first, second, and third episodes contain a considerable amount of action. The fourth is a slower exposition episode.

While I tend to criticize shows that have mindless plots, I generally do so when the show takes itself too seriously. In the case of Coyote Ragtime Show, the anime knows it’s just a fun action show. Sure, Franca gets emo sometimes, but the show never really gets that sentimental. I mean, the anime has 12 robo-goth-loli-assassin droids! How can it be serious?

Character Designs and Art:
You can check out my first impressions post for some screencaps. The art is really solid, and I especially like the 12 sisters. Okay, so the anime panders to what fans like. Nothing wrong with that.

The animation is also top notch. Like I wrote earlier, almost all of the episodes have some kind of action sequence in them, and the animation doesn’t get all crappy after the first episode. One thing that is starting to weird me out though is ufotable’s ED sequences. Rather than being “cute” claymation, they’re just “creepy” now…

Speaking of creepy, I don’t think I’m a lolicon or anything, but I seemed to notice a lot of “ass shots” of Franca. Did anyone else notice that!? How old is she supposed to be? Let’s just assume she’s an h-game character, and she’s 18 but looks 15…

The Actual DVD:
The DVD case has some glittery hologram action going on. Just thought I’d mention that! Also, the DVD itself has like, no extras. Unless you consider trailers and production art an extra. Does anyone actually look at the production art? Or the clean OP/ED sequences?

Conclusion:
If you try and compare Coyote Ragtime Show to a more serious show like Cowboy Bebop, it’ll probably pale in comparison. Taking Coyote Ragtime Show as a random fun anime that caters to fans, it’s enjoyable. Sure, the plot is unoriginal, but the characters are fun, and stuff blows up! I just wish the 12 sisters would wiggle their fingers and say “GOTH-GOTH, LOLI-LOLI!”

Many thanks to ADV Films for sending me a review copy of Coyote Ragtime Show Volume 1!
