My adventures in raw anime continue with Mamotte! Lollipop. “Mamotte” means “protect,” so this anime is supposedly about protecting a lollipop. Or maybe a (loli)pop? Anyway, here’s what I got out of the first episode:

Nina is just minding her own business, eating at some cafe with her friends. Suddenly, a red ball appears in her cake, so she eats it, thinking it’s a sweet. I can relate to this, because I was recently at a wedding where they had little plastic balls in their cake. I almost ate one!

Anyway, it turns out the ball is really some kind of magical item for a magic school’s scavenger hunt. Since Nina ate the ball (and it’s presumably in her body), she’s the new item in the hunt!

For some reason, a billion magicians start flying from the sky, and they all want a piece of Nina! Two in particular, Zero and Ichi, decide to protect her. The other two that appear in this episode, San and Forte, want to get the crystal ball by any means necessary.

The two say something about how Nina’s “just another human,” while Zero and Ichi seem to care more about Nina. I guess the rest of this anime will be about Zero and Ichi protecting Nina from the bad guy of the week. I’d be so happy if they were just trying to trick her, and cut her up the second they get a chance! Is Zero gonna have to choke a bitch!?

The character designs for this anime are average looking to me. Zero and Ichi seem pretty generic, as well as Nina herself. Forte is a badly drawn cowboy. San is probably my favorite character because she’s a goth loli, and she goes all XD a lot.

I guess I should note that they weren’t very original picking names for these anime characters. Zero = zero, Ichi = one, Nina = two?, San = three, Forte = Four…

One thing I noticed was that the animation budget already seems to be really tight. I think they reused animation from earlier parts about 3-4 times already! And it’s the first episode! And how could I forget to mention the superfluous naked magical boy henshin scene? I like my anime without henshin scenes in general; moreso if there’s boys in them…

I also thought the anime’s voice acting was a little weak in some points (Zero’s in particular). Perhaps it’s because I’m watching the anime raw, and I’m not being so distracted by subtitles…

The OP is a little too cute and happy for my tastes. Likewise with the ED. I think I’m gonna get cavities just listening to them…

Mamotte! Lollipop was a pretty easy anime for me to follow. Maybe that’s because every other word was either “Mamoru,” “Mamotte,” or “Mamoritai.” There were a few parts where I just had to get meaning from context.

The only part that made me laugh was when Zero told Nina she had no chest (Mune nai yo!). The cute parts are nice (like when Nina and San eat cake), but I’m not sure that they’ll get me past the rest of this anime. I’ll probably just watch an extra episode of Mamotte! Lollipop to make sure.
