Gyagu Manga Biyori is an anime that actually came out February 2005. Back then, I had read about it and was hoping it would get subbed, because I dig the gag manga anime genre. Hits like "Sexy Commando Gaiden: Sugoiyo!! Masarusan" and "Boboboubo Boubobo" have a special place in my heart. Did this gag anime live up to my strict expectations? Read on to find out:
Simply put, Gyagu Manga Biyori didn’t live up to my expectations. Sure, it’s random and strange, but that doesn’t necessarily make it an awesome gag anime. The first episode deals with a company putting stickers into their snacks so kids will buy them. The stickers just have a picture of this random kid not smiling, or smiling strangely. It’s random, and it should be funny, but for some reason, it’s not.
The second episode has these two guys in a boat. They need salt for their onigiri, so one guy starts sweating to get salt from his sweat. Okay, so actually that was kinda funny. Still, this anime never reaches the level of Sexy Commando in its ability to make me laugh. Maybe the gags simply don’t translate well to anime.
Still, I’m glad Ayu decided to fansub this series, even if it’s not that great. Maybe it’ll get better. I’ll still watch it anyway. I mean, each episode is only 5 minutes, so I don’t really have anything to lose.

I describe it as “kinda funny, but not really”. It tries too hard.
I thought they were hillarious, but I felt that a lot of the humor was not funny once it was translated into English.
It’s funny if you’re not an idiot
[…] that’s in my favorite genre: random. You know, like Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, Sexy Commando, and Gag Manga Biyori? I got the whole series during that ADV sale, so I figured I should watch some of […]
I think it’s uneven. The Townsend Harris episodes are the funniest things I’ve ever seen from Japan, and “Magical Girl” and “I am dead” are good. The rest – not so much.
The humour about two gus on a boat is in this, that one guy is legendar japanese prince from VIIIth century, who made Japan be recognized by China, and second is his kensushi, Onono Imoko, wonderful politician, and both are wearing sport wear xD
…Maybe the humour just doesn’t translate well into western culture. Who knows. I found the strange sense of humour absolutely hilarious.
