Mamoru-kun ni Megami no Shukufuku wo! – Anime First Impressions

As Hinano stated, Mamoru-kun ni Megami no Shukufuku wo! is the anime that really confused all of us at the Anime Nano Podcast. The seemingly Lilliputian size of the green-haired kid coupled with the giant girl in that promo picture made us all give a collective WTF? But how can you go wrong when the anime’s official website is megadere.com!?

Mamoru-kun ni Megami no Shukufuku wo! actually has normally sized characters for the most part. The titular character, Yoshimura Mamoru, is a total shota. Unlike most shota who have blonde hair, Mamoru’s hair is green. He’s starting his first day of class at some magic school when he sees the megadere Ayako. She immediately commands him to go out with her and switches all of the trees into sakura blossom mode!

Apparently, Ayako is the strongest magician in the school and can control the powers of Beatrice! Is it just me or does Beatrice sounds like some old lady’s name? The word of Ayako’s confession gets around school and soon the best student council enlists Mamoru in some kind of “Koi no Cupid Daisakusen” which I’ll translate as “Operation: Cupid Love!” They should’ve added a “doki doki” to the front while they were at it…

Throughout the episode, a bunch of other random stuff happens. Like Ayako gets megadere from seeing Mamoru. Then she gets megatsun because she’s embarrassed from blushing so much. Then she destroys the student council’s base. There’s also another scene where Ayako’s stalker causes a traffic accident when he sees Ayako’s panties and has a nosebleed. This isn’t the most intelligent anime…

So I guess the story revolves around the mystery of why Ayako likes Mamoru plus the adventures that the student council will have saving the Earth with their magic. Or something. It’s actually not quite clear to me yet. The anime does succeed in getting laughs, which is always a good thing. The last time I saw a nosebleed actually have an effect on the plot was Magical Pokan, which was a pretty sweet anime.

I can appreciate the fact that Mamoru-kun ni Megami no Shukufuku wo! doesn’t take itself too seriously. I think it’s about time an anime took the whole tsundere character archetype and started mocking it. When Ayako is megadere, she’s very very dere, and when she’s megatsun she’s horrid. She switches between the two so often that it’s really just making fun of characters like Suisouseki and Shana. Speaking of which, look at this.

The character designs for this anime are definitely creative. Perhaps too creative. Yes, I’m talking about the drill hair girl in the student council. There’s also the token guy whose eyes are always shut. The student council also has not one, but two meganekko! I prefer the pigtails one.

The animation seemed decent, especially when Ayako would use her magic to change the trees or switch from dusk to evening. I really wish they’d make the characters go into chibi mode or use more wacky expressions though. I should also point out that there’s quite a bit of fanservice, which is awesome.

No OP this episode. I may have heard a clip of it during the sponsor message, but not enough to pass judgment on it. The ED is okay. It’s not spectacular, but it’s not bad either.

So far, Mamoru-kun ni Megami no Shukufuku wo! is shaping up to be a really generic anime. In this case, I believe the genericness is being used to parody other anime. Or maybe it’s just genuinely generic. Either way, I’ll probably keep watching this one since I like the characters and I want to see more megadere action!

It looks interesting, hopefully it gets subbed (I’ve discovered my not-so-much-l33t Japanese skills don’t cut it for watching raws). I’d recommend also checking out Otome wa Boku ni Koshiteru, the first episode had some really funny moments and the DCSS-like character designs don’t hurt either. Oh, and the ED is catchy as all hell too 🙂

Tis gradually being subbed. Of course its not an intelligent anime, its flipping stupid… but i also really like it. I’m not completely sure why.. its horrendously cliche… but it is very pretty, its got some nicely done comedy, the lead isn’t a perv, and the romance isn’t too bad
