Nagasarete Airantou – Anime First Impressions

Nagasarete Airantou is sort of like Gilligan’s Island, except an anime version. This means less Skippers and Professors, and more Gingers and Mary Anns! Sounds like a good change to me!

After (apparently) falling off of a cruise ship and being abandoned by the crew, Ikuto somehow manages to survive and finds himself on an island paradise! He gets fished up by Suzu (Yui Horie!) and gets immediate CPR, even though he’s not drowning.

When he recovers, he finds out that the island is inhabited by people who left Japan after the sakoku period to explore the world. Their ship crash landed on the island, and they’ve been living there for like 100 years. That Obaa-san is old!

The village elder, who sorta looks like a miniature version of the baabaa from Sprited Away, entrusts Suzu to take care of Ikuto. Along the way, he’s harassed by some loli ninja-ish girl who hit him with a blowdart. This is only the beginning of his trials. Later on, he takes a bath and gets totally surprised when Suzu enters with him. I wasn’t surprised at all. Then the loli ninja joins and Ikuto predictably faints from loss of blood.

After the bath, Ikuto is kidnapped by loli ninja, only to be rekidnapped by the busty carpenter and the loli bear-rider. That means she’s a loli who rides a bear, not someone who rides a loli bear…

They have a fight. It’s pretty awesome. I wish Ikuto had stuck around to see more of it. During his escape, Ikuto also runs into the bipolar meganekko and the other blow dart girl. Then all of the women on the island start chasing him. It’s revealed that he’s the only man on the island; the rest of the inhabitants are hot women. Ikuto then decides to row away on a crappy boat.

Ummmm, what!? What kind of guy decides to leave a paradise island with hot babes of every variety (not including the obaaba)!? Is this guy insane? Stupid? Gar!? Anyway, the girls allow him to try and leave. The island is surrounded by a bunch of veritable Charybdii, and a giant whale named “Sashimi.”

So finally Ikuto relents and decides to live on the island. It can’t be that bad, right? One has to wonder, however, why there are no men on the island. It can’t just be a coincidence…

Nagasarete Airantou isn’t going to win any awards for being original. It probably won’t win any awards for having unique character designs either. Still, the animation is pretty nice, and the anime is fun to watch. All of the characters are pretty funny with their weird quirks. Suprisingly, my favorite character isn’t the meganekko. It’s probably the blow darter #2.

I wrote in my Spring anime previews that this show reminded me of Mahoraba. Apparently many of the people who worked on that show are behind this anime as well! So that’s a definite plus!

I still think there might be some kind of plot later on. Like maybe there’s a monster that eats men, or all the women are man cannibals, or something like that. For now, I can get by with the slapstick jokes and whatnot.

I can typically handle one of these generic anime per season. When there’s a lack of actual good shows, I do like to just veg out and watch these dumb, but enjoyable anime. I’ll make Nagasarete Airantou my stupid, fun anime (that I’ll watch anyway) of the season, unless a better, stupider one comes along.

I will be following this anime, seems kind of fun. 🙂 Thanks for the “first impression” part. 🙂

One man + Lots of women + a Volcano in the island + No other men around = Human sacrifice to the God of Fire or similar Gods.

Follow your instinct Ikuto before it is too late!!! I think he is suspicious because it is TOO GOOD to be true.

Nice review of ep1. I don’t see many similarities to Mahoraba though, story wise at least 😐

I like the -sometimes pretty generic- art too, it definitely is a part of why this -sometimes a bit generic- anime is so funny and imho worth watching. Another plus is the picks of Seiyuus, I think. Tomohanes voice actress fits perfectly to the “bear riding loli” that rides a bear :p Also the others (Horie Yui being elite here is a given!) are somewhat put into a role that they are known for.. hm, maybe it misses a Mikuru Asahina kind of character with Mikurus VA 😉

Last but not least, I have to agree with everyone .. Ikuto has one damn enviable role there! This one will be in many “if you could be in any anime, which would you pick” discussions!

Well obviously, it’s Hinamizawa, tropical island-style. It even has the character archetypes like the grandma, busty woman and shrinemaiden-dressed loli.

Now that gives me the chills. As I recall, Higurashi also started out on a happy-happy, pastel-coloured slice-of-life note before turning into the animated equivalent of an abattoir.

I wonder if Oyashiro-sama found a new home in that volcano of theirs . . .

ah hate to break it to you but thier is no man hungery women, or man hungery animals and that mountain is not a volcano but for some reason theirs snow on top. the men died because they were all in this boat race thing when a storm popped up killing them all. this anime is probebly the weirdest thing your going to see this season but i think you’ll stop questioning it after the talking cats

well a miko with a blowpipe is not as bad as an angel with a spiked metal club so I guess it could be worse for Ikuto.
