Happy White Day!

white-day.jpg
Technically this should be a White Day picture, since Jun is a trap.

Today is White Day! So if Valentine’s Day in Japan is the bizarro version, then White Day is like the one that we Americans celebrate. That is, in Japan, on 2/14 girls will give chocolates to guys they like (or feel socially obligated to, which is pretty much all guys they know). On 3/14, the guys who received chocolate must repay that kindness with gifts of their own. But it doesn’t have to be chocolate.

Of course, since there’s the SAD (Singles Awareness Day) that’s held on 2/14, there should be a March counterpart as well, right? Today is also Black Day for those guys who got nothing a month before. I guess I should be celebrating that…

Then again, I’d rather just skip all this crap and celebrate like a true nerd. Yes, today is Pi Day as well. I should probably be spending some time memorizing digits in pi.

And what does this have to do with anime or manga? I totally an episode of D.N.Angel where White Day is the main focus. And I think anime uses both holidays pretty well for plot development. I can’t remember any other White Days in anime, but I’m sure they’re out there.

Munto – Anime DVD Review

munto-cover.jpg

Munto was released quietly by Central Park Media back in 2004. When it was announced that the title was getting a price cut ($10!), I noticed that it was done by Kyoto Animation. Yeah, that Kyoto Animation! Time to review some Munto!

Negima Live Action Drama in the Works!?

negima-cosplay.jpg
This is just some random cosplay image I found on sagbooru, or danbooru 2, or whatever the new danbooru is.

So according to ComiPress, there’s going to be a Negima live action drama! And that’s about all the news there is.

Personally, I dunno if a live action Negima can work. I don’t know if there’s any real life kids who could fit the Negima role well. Plus with all the girls, I’d have a feeling it’d be hard to tell them all apart (unless they actually had pink hair, etc).

Also, would you really want to watch a 7 year old boy get into ecchi situations with 13 year old girls in real life? The anime version works because the girls at least look like they’re older than that. You can sorta suspend your disbelief when it’s anime and manga, but with real life? I think it’d just be creepy.

Anime Nano Popularity Index – Code Geass?

code-geass.gif

So I was checking out the nifty footer popularity cloud thing that I wrote for Anime Nano, and noticed that lately, Code Geass is totally kicking butt! It even has more entries (in the past two weeks) than Kanon (36 (make that 37 once Anime Nano picks up this post) to 32)!

To be honest, I haven’t even watched the first episode of this anime yet. Should I? I’ve noticed a lot of buzz about Code Geass, but I never felt the need to watch it. Apparently there’s mecha and Pizza Hut in this show?

Can anyone recommend or unrecommend this anime? Is it any good? Geass knows I need another anime in my backlog…

The World of Disgaea – Artbook Review

the-world-of-disgaea.jpg

If you read Basugasubakuhatsu regularly, you’ll know that I’m kind of an otaku when it comes to Disgaea. I’ve posted quite a bit about Disgaea stuff, like the figures and prinny plushie, the manga, the sequel’s manga, the anime… When I saw The World of Disgaea at Amazon.com for like $14, I knew I had to have it!

VS. Versus Vol. 1 – Manga Review

vs-versus.jpg

Julie from Manga Maniac Cafe suggested that I read Versus in order to shrink my major backlog. After reading the blurb on the back of the book, I found out this is a music manga! But could it possibly be as good as Nodame Cantabile?

Stray Little Devil Vol. 1 – Manga Review

stray-little-devil-volume-1.jpg

Out of all of my recent manga acquisitions and backlog, I chose to read Stray Little Devil first. Why? Because the cover is really freaking cute! Any other reasons? Not really. I know you’re not supposed to judge books by their covers, but do manga count?

Anime + Manga Backlog: The Great Wall of Manga

anime-manga-backlog-small.jpg

In the short time that Basugasubakuhatsu has been around, it seems the site has seen quite a bit of popularity. One of the perks of being a semi-popular anime site is that companies will occasionally send me their titles to review. Basugasubakuhatsu started off as an anime first impressions site, but I guess it’s more of a review-centric one now, at least, during the months that new anime aren’t starting in Japan.

Anyway, while I was out of town, I got a pretty huge care package from DrMaster Publications and CMX Manga. I’ve had a backlog of stuff to review for a while now (and I’ve been getting through it) but now the backlog is ridiculous.

I stacked all of the anime and manga that I haven’t reviewed yet, and it’s pretty much the Great Wall of China, except in anime and manga form. Some of these are my own purchases (Nodame Cantabile, Keroro Gunso, Niea under 7, Haibane Renmei) but most are review copies. Don’t forget, I also ordered those 10 DVDs from RightStuf not too long ago… Yikes.

Now I’m asking for your help. Is there anything in particular in this wall that you’d like to see reviewed? I’ll try and do the requests first if there are any. There are a few DVDs that I can’t quite review yet since I don’t have the previous ones in the sets. If you can’t make out what the titles are from the picture, lemme know and I’ll write them out. But that’d take about as long as writing a few reviews…

Spring 2007 Anime Preview: Part 4

This is the fourth and final part of my Spring 2007 anime preview. In it, I take a peek at Terra e…, Romeo x Juliet, Lovely Complex, Lucky Star and Kaze no Stigma.

Terra e… (To Terra)

to-terra.jpg

Terra e (or To Terra, or Towards the Terra) is a classic manga that was just recently released by Vertical Inc. They probably couldn’t have timed it better since the anime will surely spark interest in the manga too.

It looks like Terra e will be an old school sci-fi action anime. Hopefully there’ll be some new school hotness added too. The story has to do with psychic kids and the dream to return… to Terra. I’ll probably watch this because I’ll be reading the manga anyway. Plus the website’s graphics look way slick.

Spring 2007 Anime Preview: Part 3

Part 3 of my Spring 2007 anime preview contains facts (or made up lies) about sola, Princess Resurrection, Kono Aozora ni Yakusoku wo, THE SKULLMAN and Nagasarete Airantou. Can you separate the fact from fiction? I can’t!

sola

sola.jpg

At the time of me writing this, there isn’t a translation anywhere for the plot of sola, and I’m finding it hard to translate myself since the text on the website is embedded in the image instead of actual text. Here is what I got without using a dictionary (because I’m lazy):

Something about a first year high school student who is a boy who likes “the sky.” And ummm, then something about a present, and something something “gothloli.” Sounds interesting all right! I’m guessing “sola” is referring to the “sora” (sky) in the anime description. But I could be wrong.

Other than that, the character designs do look good, and anidb says it’s a collaboration between the writer(s?) of Kanon and Da Capo. I’ll be watching because it looks pretty for now.
