When I was previewing all of the Winter 2007 anime, Venus Versus Virus stood out to me because the art looked really good, plus it was listed under the awesome genre of yuri! I finally got a chance to check out the raw version of the anime. So how does the alliterative Venus Versus Virus stand up to the other Winter 2007 anime so far?
Sumire seems to be just another normal high school girl. But she has one special power: she can see viruses. Viruses in this case are not those ugly things in Dr. Mario, they’re more like majin, or evil spirits. She works part time at a virus extermination agency. Along with Lucia, Sumire rid their clients of dangerous viruses.
In this episode, they help a girl who thinks that a shadow (kage) is following her. Yep, it turns out to be a virus. Sumire and Lucia take the client to the park where she first saw the virus. Both Sumire and the client get sneak attacked for massive damage while Lucia is out looking for the virus! They regroup back at their headquarters.
After using her evil eye to “examine” the fallen client, Lucia decides to let Sumire stand guard over her that night. Sumire, being the unprofessional that she is, falls asleep. The virus then decides to pop out of the client’s body and attacks Sumire!
Lucia shows up and they take the fight to the front lawn. After a total fake out dissolving, the virus gets a hold of Sumire! Lucia shoots her with the antivirus bullets and Sumire flips out! She pretty much pwns the virus instantly before trying to take out Lucia herself. Luckily for Lucia, Sumire gets back to normal.
The plot for VVV feels really similar to Bleach, which already had a clone called Busou Renkin… It also kind of resembles D.Gray-man. Others have compared this anime to Getbackers and Chrno Crusade. While Venus Versus Virus seems to be a mix of pretty much every other anime ever, I still think it’s fairly good watch. The girls are cute, plus possible yuri!
Speaking of copies, the character designs also seem kind of suspect. The first thing I thought when I saw Sumire was “Hazumu!?” Even the school uniforms are almost identical! Also, I couldn’t help but make an association between Lucia and Barasuishou from Rozen Maiden. It must be the eyepatch thing. Also, Onsokumaru!?
I guess the art and animation are fairly average. I really liked the colors that they used in this anime, though. There are a lot of pastels and the mood is set well with the color. When things start getting eerie, they take on a purplish hue.
None of the raws that I got were in a good format to output to mp3, so I just skipped it. It’s probably for the better anyway, since I didn’t particularly like the OP or the ED. Though the OP sequence had a lot of suggested yuri, which is bragable.
Venus Versus Virus is a seriously generic anime. Then again, as long as it copies the aspects of a good anime, it should be good too, right? Maybe not. I’ll give this one a few more episodes to prove its worth. And by prove it’s worth, I mean that this anime needs yuri!

Hmmm…a hybrid show? Maybe I should watch the first ep then, lol!
god this first episode was awesome! hopefully it gets better and not any worse lol
Goth Goth Loli Loli….
The fansub I saw had Ruchia instead of Lucia, so the Bleach clone aspect tended to stick out a lot more…
…um just let me know when they get to the yuri part.
well, it did say in wikipedia tht its yuri.
hope it is!
OP and ED scream yuri. It reminds me of KnM’s OP and ED. (Giving the 2 girls 80% of the screen time in the OP and showing a picture of them in the ED)
I like the OP and ED songs, almost better than I liked the episode itself.
Even the commercial intro and outros were soaked in yuri. If the series doesn’t do anything, you know the doujin cirles will.
well in the second epi when samura was sitting out side of the school and her friends saw her with Lucia earlier and asked if she was in love with Lucia hen the other friend said she was hott, but i think she likes a guy so it can be Yuri sounding to tease Yuri fans which a lot of anime do but no its not labeled Yuri just yet unless im missing something.
This is one of the better anime that i’ve seen. It has a strong story with interesting characters. The anime needs a 2nd season.
I just hated the fact that they pronounced “Sumire”, “Sumiri”. It sounds really stupid :/
Eh, the first episode didn’t appeal to me that much. And the character complex is a little overused.
When I saw the beginning of the first episode. I though ‘Good art. But I can tell this is going to be a cliche boring fighting anime.’ However, I actually enjoyed it. Plus, I did happen to notice the hinting of possible shoujo ai. (Especially in the opening. It reminds me of the subtile Kannaduki no miko hinting in their opening) I can already see a Lucia/Sumire relationship, if not in the series, than in the fanfictions =P
What does yuri mean?
