Hmmm, is it a little too late for Christmas anime reviews? I think not! When I saw Itsudatte My Santa listed on anidb, I thought, "awesome, another Ken Akamatsu anime!" Did Itsudatte My Santa really live up to the expectations that I attached to the Ken Akamatsu name? Read on to find out!
Itsudatte My Santa is an OVA about a guy named Santa who was born on Christmas eve. This sucks for him, because he gets Christmas/Birthday combo presents. Heh, this reminded me of my brother, whose birthday is on December 23rd! Anyway, Santa’s life also sucks because he lives alone and his parents are on some mission far far away.
Through no explanation whatsoever, Santa meets Mai, who claims to be Santa Claus. Okay, so I understand that this series has to be consise because it’s only an OVA. Any explanation would just take time away for the fan service right?
Mai learns about Santa’s misfortunes and wants him to spend the night with her. Mai seems pretty naive, so she probably doesn’t mean "that." Hijinks ensue, and eventually Santa realizes that Mai could really be Santa Claus. Heart-warming ensues and everyone’s happy!
The second episode involves Mai having to say goodbye to Santa and being forced to return (to the North pole?). Two new characters are also introduced! There’s Sherry, Mai’s childhood friend, and Maimai, Mai’s little sister.
So basically, the formula for episode 2 is as follows: Sherry tries to get Maimai to leave Mai and Santa alone so Mai can say goodbye. Maimai bites Sherry and yells "shine!" (die!). Repeat.
There was a "next episode preview" after the 2nd episode, but I think it was just a gag. Then again, I thought the preview for the 2nd episode was a gag, I mean, seriously, a Christmas special beach episode!?
Overall, Itsudatte My Santa was really boring and pointless. There were a lot of sappy dramatic parts where I might’ve cared had I actually liked the characters. Santa is about as two-dimensional as you can get, and so is Mai. I can understand that there’s not much room for character development in a 2 episode OVA, but it really seems like nothing worthwhile happened at all.
That said, The whole Maimai biting part was actually the funniest part of
Itsudatte My Santa. Seriously! She’s my new favorite character! If they released a spin-off where all she did was bite people and tell them to die, I would watch it religiously (and no, I’m not a Lolicon!).
After other Ken Akamatsu anime like Love Hina and Negima, I was kind of dissapointed by this OVA. Then again, the Love Hina OVAs were pretty terrible too huh? Maybe Ken Akamatsu should just stick to the tv series…

I totally agree. Maimai & Shirley are the funniest! I could do without all the other characters.
[…] Finally (for now), Itsudatte My Santa is probably the weirdest license in this whole Kick Off thing. I reviewed this a while back when it was fansubbed. I guess with the popularity of Love Hina, people might be interested in My Santa. But the OVA was so incredibly weird and schizophrenic… I mean, seriously, who has a beach episode in a Christmas special? My Santa is scheduled for a Fall 2007 release. […]
[…] The next one is a beach episode! WTF? I haven’t seen time go by this fast in an anime since Itsudatte My Santa, which had a Christmas and then Beach episode back to […]
