Alien Nine Vol. 2 – Manga Review

The second volume of Alien Nine manga definitely takes the action and kicks it up a few notches! But don’t worry, there’s also enough emo crying to please fans of that genre, too!

Story:
The Alien Party is still at it, exterminating aliens that threaten their school. In this volume, they fight a weird gigantic duck thing, little flying eyeballs with mouths, and other strange alien beings. Yuri is still a crybaby, though perhaps a bit less in this volume. Kasumi gets eaten by the duck thing, and Kumi gets eaten by the eyeball things, so Yuri actually gets through relatively unscathed. Except that she loses her memories and starts acting like a baby…

Analysis:
This volume was seriously brutal. There was a ton of violence, both to aliens and schoolgirls alike. It’s kind of strangely satisfying seeing the Borgs’ tentacles cut up a giant alien, but when the girls get hurt, it’s kind of unsettling. Like with de-limbings, and whatnot. Ewww.

Luckily, there’s “Cell Gel” to the rescue, which heals pretty much any cell damage really fast. Even when the patient is dead! The wonders of future technology!

Things aren’t looking too good for the group, though. By the end of the volume, Kasumi is messed up because she’s been symbiotically linked to the “yellow knife” (duck thing). Kumi is messed up because she died and got symbiotically linked to her Borg, so she’s now technically an alien. Yuri is still normal, but there’s really no hope for that girl…

Art:
I really enjoyed reading this volume, mainly due to the art. The aliens are all so weird and unique! It’s really fun since the designs really do seem alien. Apparently the duck thing’s head isn’t really its head. Its arms are…

I want to see an art book from Tomizawa Hitoshi where he just draws a bunch of aliens and their physiques!

Conclusion:
Alien Nine is gory and kind of depressing, but it’s also really interesting to read. The aliens really add a sense of uniqueness to the Alien Nine universe. Plus it’s super awesome seeing the aliens get cut open too! I hope that doesn’t make me weird or anything…

Many thanks to Central Park Media for sending me a review copy of Alien Nine Volume 2!
