So Julie from MangaManicCafe had told me in the comments section of my review of Recipe For Gertrude 1 that the manga gets better as the story progresses. This was especially good news, since I thought the first volume was good to begin with! So yeah, here’s my review of The Recipe For Gertrude Volume 2.

This was especially good news, since I thought the first volume was good to begin with! So yeah, here’s my review of The Recipe For Gertrude Volume 2.

Story:
So in this volume, Gertrude rescues Sahara from the clutches of her evil “brother” and finds out that she’s got the recipe written on her bones! The two get to work to find out how to get the recipe back into the original book, and out of Sahara. But Sahara’s evil brother is still trying to capture her and Gertrude.

Analysis:
This volume is a lot more touchy feely than the last one. Sahara’s got issues in trusting Gertrude, which is understandable since her brother just happened to betray her and hypnotize her parents… She’s afraid that he’ll kill her since she has the recipe etched on her bones. Luckily he doesn’t.

I don’t think she’s as afraid of dying as much as losing Gertrude though. Awww, how sweet! The manga gets uber mushy at the end of the volume when the two realize they’re in love! Or something like that. Actually, I really enjoy the relationship they have, since it skips a lot of the crap that other manga have regarding relationships. Like no love confessions, no Valentine’s day episode, no Christmas Eve episode… It’s kind of nice.

Art:
So the only issues I really have with this manga is the art. And related to that, sometimes the flow is really abrupt. Like you’ll see the characters walking to the store in one scene, and in the next, they’re inside. But how did they get inside!? Maybe that’s just being nitpicky.

The art hasn’t really gotten much better, and Sahara still sorta looks like a dude. She occasionally wears some cute outfits, which helps.

Conclusion:
I’m not really sure why I like The Recipe For Gertrude as much as I do. I guess it’s got some kind of special charm thing going. It isn’t the art, and I’m not sure it’s the story either. Well, I guess it must be the story in one way or another. Just in an intangible kind of way…?

Many thanks to CMX Manga for sending me a review copy of The Recipe For Gertrude Volume 2!

One reply on “The Recipe For Gertrude Vol. 2 – Manga Review”

you know, i found the first one cute, but i’m not so sure i might even try to look for this one. it just seems too muchy with love now, i mean this is a demon manga with a cute theme, but now this love is going to interfere with everything else, and her brother is so lame.
