Penguin Musume (ペンギン娘) Vol. 1 – Manga First Impressions

I just got a shipment from Yesasia of random stuff. It consisted of Disgaea PSP, and this random manga I bought called “Penguin Musume.” It’s in Japanese, so it’ll take me a while to read it. I did get through a couple of pages, so here are my first impressions.

Penguin Musume seems to be a random “sometimes” 4-koma starring a weird girl named Nankyoku Sakura. Her last name means “South Pole” or “Antarctic” so her friends call her “penguin.” Much like Konata from Lucky Star, Sakura seems to be obsessed with anime and manga. She started her first day at school wearing a school swimsuit, cat ears, and a maid tiara and called it her “pajamas.” She’s also insanely rich, apparently.

I bought the manga mainly because I liked the cover (which is really cute), and partly because it was cheap. So I didn’t really have anything to lose. I knew it had furigana, which was definitely a plus. Anyway, it still takes time for me to read, though I am kind of surprised how much I can understand from knowing a lot of vocabulary and from context. Still, it kind of kills the punchline when you have to look up the meaning of the words…

The characters refer to Sakura as an “A-girl,” which is apparently the female counterpart to an “A-boy,” but I don’t know what that means. I’m inferring that it’s just another name for “otaku,” though maybe it has other connotations. (Edit: I just read some more, and I think “A” is an abbreviation for “Akihabara.” Makes sense.) Anyway, I took one of the 4-koma style strips and translated it. It’s sorta funny, in a “WTF” kinda way:

I’m curious about this now (female otaku myself, we rock) and hope it’s translated… although I dunno, the art reminds me of a webcomic XD
