Spring 2007 Anime Preview: Part 2

My Spring 2007 anime preview continues today with Idol Master Xenoglossia, CLAYMORE, Wellber no Monogatari ~Sisters of Wellber~, Darker Than Black – Kuro no Keiyakusha and Kamichama Karin. Get ready for pure speculation!

Idol Master Xenoglossia

idol-master-xenoglossia.jpg

Idol Master Xenoglossia is based on an idol simulation game where you train young girls to become pop idols. Hopefully this anime won’t be as bad as that other idol show, Lovedol… This one also includes mecha for some reason. Are Japanese people just randomly adding mecha to all shows now!?

I can’t see how this anime could be very good, but I might watch one episode to see how bad it is. Apparently DiGiKerot likes Idol Master enough to buy the super secret special edition

CLAYMORE

claymore.jpg

From playing a whole lotta RPGs, I know that a claymore is a type of sword! It’s also an anime starring a major babe in tight fitting armor! The plot is pretty generic though. Demons blah blah blah special weapons called claymores blah blah blah. Looks like your standard shounen garbage. Except with a hot girl as the lead, instead of a kid who wants to become stronger, the next hokage, or the next stronger hokage.

Wellber no Monogatari ~Sisters of Wellber~

wellber.jpg

Wellber no Monogatari, or as I like to call it, “Legend of Wellber,” has something to do with a country in turmoil, a princess, etc. Looks pretty yawntastic to me, but the art is good! The trailer doesn’t reveal much, besides the fact that this anime uses the latest advancements in crappy tank CG technology.

I think I’ll pass on this, unless people say it’s good. People I trust.

Darker Than Black – Kuro no Keiyakusha

darker-than-black.jpg

Darker Than Black is apparently studio BONES’ answer to Ai Yori Aoshi (bluer than indigo) and Yoake Mae Yori Ruri Iro Na (brighter than dawning blue). It appears to be about some kind of “Hell’s Gate” popping up in the middle of Tokyo that gives people super powers. Super evil powers!

It might be stupid, or it might be awesome. I’ll have to take a look when it airs to find out which.

Kamichama Karin

kamichama-karin.jpg

Kamichama Karin is one of Koge Donbo’s manga! I guess the best way to describe it would be by comparing it to a magical girl show. Except Karin turns into a goddess. I remember reading a chapter of this manga from Tokyopop’s free manga sampler thing.

Koge Donbo’s stuff is always cute and awesome (she also did DiGi Charat, Pita Ten, and Yoki Koto Kiku) so I’ll definitely watch this for sure. I should probably buy the manga too.

Looking forward to Claymore, Wellber (kind of), and I’m REALLY looking forward to Darker than Black.

Xenoglossia just make me laugh. And then I wanna puke. It sounds like just about everything I hate in anime these days.

Kamichama Karin doesn’t sound like my cup of tea.

Re: Hung on Claymore

You couldn’t be more wrong, Claymore is shounen? Yeah right, if you think titles like Berserk, MPD Psycho and Fressia are shounen. It really shows that you made no attempt to research for one minute what the hell you were writing about.

Besides clearing that up, I was looking forwards to the Claymore anime since it is done by Madhouse and from the screenshots released it looks quite nice, however the magazine in which it was running, Monthly Shounen Jump ceased publications recently there are rumors that all series (even Claymore, which was the most successful one in the magazine) have been canceled, meaning who knows how Madhouse will choose to end it.

Even though I hate shounen, I’ll probably watch Claymore since it’s gals with swords FTW. Like Mai-HiME but less stupid.

And Teru says it’s seinen, so that’s even better.

(Didn’t read the manga, BTW)

I’m looking forward to Darker than Black, but by the same token that means I’m being careful not to get my hopes up, because the shows that I think look the best beforehand always end up being the ones I like least.

Xenoglossia doesn’t really have anything to do with pop idols – the only thing they’ve taken from the games are the characters (which have been tweaked anyway). Think My-HiME meets Armageddon and thats pretty much what you are likely to be getting. Really, it’s just a stereotypical modern Sunrise show which happens to take most of its cast members from a game. If you like HiME, ZHiME or, to a lesser extent, Code Geass you’ll probably end up liking this as it’ll be much the same kind of thing.

I’m looking forward to Claymore, especially since it is Madhouse who will be doing it( they have a great track record of animating Manga). Not to be overly harsh, Hung, but you really should at least do SOME research before you dismiss a series so casually. If anything, it would prevent foot-in-mouth syndrome( and avoid damage to your creditability as a reviewer).

Go check out the Claymore manga. You may or may not like it, but at least you will have a better idea of what Claymore is all about.

Cheers.

claymore and kamichama karin look good, while i was pretty much turned off by the darker than black promo (although the sisters of wellber may interest me as well)

i just saw the preview of darker than black; it looks awesome; loving the op theme~ howling; abingdon fever

Reviews:

Idol Master:
Despite it’s crap game origins, It’s suprisingly decent. It’s silly & fun to watch. The ‘Idols’ in question are actually Artificially intellegent Mecha, the ‘Master’ refers to the the girls, who act as partners/pilots. It’s got a vague Evangelion VS Stelvia feel to it. Thankfully no aliens or lame quasi-religious angst. Although there is a girl in a penguin suit, ninja gothic lolitas, impending meteorites, and an as of yet unnamed evil organisation complete with scary mecha. Worth the download.

Claymore:
While pretty generic, is also extremely addictive, much in the way that shows like ‘Berserk’ are largely guilty pleasures (i.e: it’s Superbly gory and hyper violent). The claymore in question isn’t the sword, but the girl, who is half human, half demon. Lots of Steely eyed, emotionless grit, with heaps of impalement, head chopping, & disembowment. The Male sub-character is largely annoying, and 2 dimensional. Above average animation(which seems to decrease after the first 2 eps :p). Worth the download if you enjoyed berserk or Hellsing, otherwise skip it.

Loving Claymore,I’ve watched up 2 episode 17 and it is damn great!….Can’t wait to c how they end the series.
