Urr, in the case of Kuromi, I actually picked it up when it was originally released (R2 - they actually subtitled it since they picked up on foreign interest) because I'm a big Akitaro Daichi fan and was finishing off watching the Kodocha DVDs ^^;

I think it was the first time I used Amotokyo instead of CDJapan, and I stuck with them pretty much until they closed because they were awesome and would stick some promo posters and stuff in the box when you ordered something. It's a shame they were pretty much killed off by Amazon opening their Japanese store. In any case, I remember this particular situation pretty well.

Aside from that, I've read a whole lot of anime magazines and books in my time ^^;

The thing you have to understand with the original Kuromi OAV is that it was a total indie production - it wasn't attached to any of the big anime distrobuters or anything. Originally it was only actually available in a handful of stores in Japan - the only online store those outside Japan could buy it from was (the sadly now defunct) Amotokyo, and that was only because they went to the animators and asked if they could carry it. Basically, this whole OAV was pretty much funded by the staff, which is why it's only, like, 40 minutes long. It was given a wider release later after it gained a reputation, but that wasn't until quite a while later.

@Karura: I actually have the second ova too. I'll probably review pretty soon since my mind is already in Kuromi mode.

There is a second episode, but it was released separately and covers the group trying to animate three shows at once with the 'help' of some veterans. Both episodes may be predictable but I thought they were a lot of fun, and a nice way of showing that making anime is anything but easy.
