Byousoku 5cm Part 1: Oukashou - Anime Review

I finally got a chance to check out the super beautiful Byousoku 5cm. Apparently sakura petals fall at the rate of 5cm per second. Everyone knows they really accelerate at 9.8m/s2

Byousoku 5cm is the story of two separated friends, Takaki and Akari. When they were together at school, they were like kindred spirits. Unfortunately Akari had to move away. They still keep in touch by way of writing letters. Ummm… is this anime set in the 1900s or something? You know, there’s a thing called email now?

I guess the whole letter thing makes things more dramatic. Takaki reads the letters from Akari, and even memorized the first one. Having a letter with actual handwriting is pretty cool. I’ll have to try it one of these days.

Takaki and Akari finally decide to meet. But the train that Takaki rides keeps getting delayed from the snow. It really sucks because Takaki has been wanting to meet Akari again for a long ass time. Plus he knows Akari is probably worrying about him. I got felt really bad for the guy.

Eventually, Takaki gets to his destination and the two are finally reunited! I probably would’ve cried at that point, if I was emo. I was really happy though. You get to know the characters pretty well in the 20 minutes or so leading up to their reunion. Just as quickly as they were reunited, the two part the next day. Who knows if their relationship will ever work out?

I should note that the animation is probably the awesomest that I’ve ever seen. The attention to detail is amazing. I feel bad for taking my eyes off the actual picture to read subtitles. I even went back a few times to take in the beautiful scenery. Saying that this anime looks good is like calling Centron Grieve an apprentice level Galleodon!

So yes, the animation is freaking awesome, but I thought the story was just as engaging. Maybe I’m just being sentimental, but I really cared about the characters, and I had only known them for 27 minutes or so. I really have to know what happens next. Will their love fade with time, or will they eventually be reunited and live happily ever after? Damn it, when is the next part out?

    >>Ummm… is this anime set in the 1900s or something? You know, there’s a thing called email now?>>

Not when this story took place there wasn’t, which was the early to mid 90’s. They’ll probably end up using cell phones as the story goes along

  2. 2 Hung Feb 24th, 2007 at 3:45 pm

Ah, ok. I figured something was up when there weren’t any cell phones. Or email. Or instant messaging.

  3. 3 Milkmaster Feb 24th, 2007 at 4:39 pm

Slight hint: Petals usually don’t fall in a vacuum. Usually there’s air involved. And friction. And more stuff. You get the point.

  4. 4 Danny Feb 24th, 2007 at 4:46 pm

i kinda thought the old trains were a dead giveaway that the show isnt set in the present lol

  5. 5 Hung Feb 24th, 2007 at 4:55 pm

Screw air resistance! I only make calculations based on controlled experimental conditions. Including inside a vacuum!

  6. 6 Hakuin96 Mar 1st, 2007 at 3:55 am

I have to say those screen shots are breathtaking… wow, I hope the story can live up to that

  7. 7 Diego Mar 1st, 2007 at 5:35 am

I just picked up “Oukashou” myself. Great stuff - no doubt about it. Can’t wait for parts 2 and 3 to come out (and the DVD in due course).

  8. 8 conrath Mar 3rd, 2007 at 8:28 pm

Just to be a smartass, the 5 cm per second probably refers to the free fall speed of petals, which takes into account the exact moment that the acceleration experienced from g equals the acceleration experienced by air resistance going the opposite direction– which is directly porportional to velocity…

So to sum it all up, I am extremely frustrated by not having the subs yet so go around trolling via physics.

  9. 9 Spiritsnare Mar 4th, 2007 at 7:00 pm

    The Serious Explanation:

Apparently sakura petals fall at the rate of 5cm per second. Everyone knows they really accelerate at 9.8m/s2…

    v = 5cm/s
    a = 9.8m/s
    d = ?
    t = ?

You can’t really figure out how fast sakura petals fall…especially without both distance and time. :3

The Random Bulls–t Explanation: Anime physics. Gotta love them.

  10. 10 Cris Mar 5th, 2007 at 9:45 pm

It’s sensible to think that the petals would fall at 5cm/s. Sue to the shape of the petals they don’t fall straight down because of the air resistance. They swirl as they fall and since their mass is very small the terminal velocity is very low even with gravity.

Can’t wait to watch parts 2 and 3!!!

  11. 11 bbnflpn Mar 9th, 2007 at 4:06 am

i just saw this and i agree with you, the ainmation was some of the most beautiful i have ever seen, i too cared for the characters and wonder what is going to happen next with them.

as for the whole email thing, sometimes people feel its more personal to write letters, i was always bad at it, and i didnt have email back when i was their age. who knows maybe it was set from when i was their age in the late 80’s early 90’s or somthing like that. thats the feel that i got from it anyway

  12. 12 dierwolf Mar 9th, 2007 at 7:14 am

just because it wasn’t mentioned before, there IS a thing called
“terminal velocity” its when an object accelerates to the point that friction from the air is pushing back as much as the object is accelerating hence reaching a stable speed,

not positive but from what I’ve seen 5cm\sec is reasonable for cherry blossoms the large area to weight ratio means it displaces more air as it is falling, hence more friction, and therefore reaching terminal velocity sooner than say mmm a lead ball would

and the whole 9.8m\s acceleration due to gravity thing it is a unit of a change in speed so saying terminal velocity literally means
    a STOP in ACCELERATION
    sigh…

    just look it up…

but omg this anime is so moving who cares about the whole cherry blossom thing imagine having to let someone go… that you love dearly, not only once…BUT TWICE

    omg that has to hurt

  13. 13 maverickzjustin Mar 9th, 2007 at 7:16 am

i dun care about the settings, this story is just superb, wonderful, long distance love story~ wow~~ O.o

  17. 17 Sand-Wind Mar 9th, 2007 at 11:52 am

well I liked the anime and since dattebayo released it instead of naruto I knew it was fake from the torrents tital everyone should know that by now.
Congrats to dattebayo with its fine experamints to make people watch other good animes I honestly enjoyed this one.

  18. 18 Daneki Mar 9th, 2007 at 12:25 pm

This is one of the best looking animes I have ever layed eyes on, and now I’m wanting to knw when the next two parts are out. Reps to DB for introducing this to us, I say.

  19. 19 Singh Mar 9th, 2007 at 1:36 pm

I just finished watching the first part, i have to honest and say that i really enjoyed it. Persoanlly its a change from the other stuff i watch and its good at making you want to watch more. I can’t wait for more episodes, ^__^.

  20. 20 Chisiken Mar 9th, 2007 at 2:54 pm

Ya a truely sweet anime i love how it was short and stright to the point without rushing anything. im surpised they fit it all in 1 episode. and who honestly cares how fast a cherry blossom falls…

  21. 21 aasi Mar 9th, 2007 at 5:36 pm

a really touching anime, gotta admit, well drawn also ^^ apart from some of you debating on “how fast a petal drops”, (which is amusing) i noticed also that this part is somewhere around the beginning of the 90’s (actually the boy had a cellphone at the end, _after_ the ending texts. those who watched the dattebayo release now that perhaps ;) and, there was a super nintendo (u know, the 16-bit? =) lying on the floor in his room at one point.

oh yea, and also like the rest of you - gotta see 2 & 3. ^^

  22. 22 Jay Mar 9th, 2007 at 8:36 pm

Oh man……..this anime, is awesome! I cannot wait for the other episodes to come out..where do you guys download your anime from? I though naruto ep5 was supposed to come out, but then it turned out that it was Oukashou..i love it.

  23. 23 Juber Mar 10th, 2007 at 2:38 am

I did the same thing, I downloaded knowing it wasn’t Naruto, but I was bored and downloaded it. I was blown away… The animation, the story, everything was so well done :| I have mixed emotions of glee for having watched it and knowing that there will be more, and slightly depressed because I don’t know where to get the second and third part (when they come out) and that i have to wait. Oh god someone tell me where!

  24. 24 Jiyuu Mar 10th, 2007 at 5:09 am

    My regards to Dattebayo!
Did suspect it was a fake but of course you have to take it anyway :B
Congratulasions dattebayo for best fakepublishing ever. Hopefully they’ll uppload the other parts to… :)

  25. 25 yen Mar 10th, 2007 at 8:07 am

Kyaa~~ it was a beautiful anime
    Can’t wait for part 2 & 3

  26. 26 Sakurai Mar 10th, 2007 at 9:58 am

Someone mentioned the “old train”… They are still in use now in Japan. I know cause I was in Japan for x’mas in 2005 and by the way, I’ve been to Tochigi myself from Asakusa (one of the district in Tokyo) and it’s freaking cold there (>.

  27. 27 Jay H. Mar 10th, 2007 at 2:23 pm

OMG THIS ISNT BAD I BEEN LOOKING FOR A DRAMA ANIME

PS THIS DOES NOT MAKE ME GAY…………
    :D
can any 1 tell me where to download more of this ?

  28. 28 jarin Mar 10th, 2007 at 5:04 pm

I came across this from Dattebayo’s site and I am thankful.

I wouldn’t mind missing naruto episodes if I get to watch animes as beautiful as 5CM.

A few people have mentioned that they can’t wait to see part 2 and 3, and understandably so. However for me that story is quite complete as such. I would like to call this a short film than an anime episode. :).

  29. 29 Naruhodou Mar 10th, 2007 at 7:27 pm

If anyone even cares, this anime takes place during the early to mid-years of the ’90s..if you pay attention to the scenes that take place in Takaki’s room, you’ll see a Super Famicom (which is the Japanese model of the Super Nintendo).

  30. 30 Rabid Mar 10th, 2007 at 11:35 pm

absolutely superb! this my be one of the greatest short anime’s i have ever seen. the art was amazing, animation was incredible, and i have to say one of the best plots i have ever seen at just drawing you in. i felt like i had known these characters for an entire series before the whole thing was over.

    thats not really right mate…
9.8m/s is when there is no wind at all… its a freefall without any wind resistance…

  32. 32 Rustan Mar 11th, 2007 at 3:11 am

Huzzah to 16-bit Super Nintendo. That system shaped my life, not to mention did a better job of raising me than my parents.

Anyways. I feel like crying; this anime was just so compelling.

errr…. like who says sakura petals accelerate at 9.8m/s2… I think 9.8 is the force of gravity on a unit of mass and is measured as N/kg… actually if really think about it logically how can a single light weighted sakura petal accelerate at a rate of 9.8m/s2, that would be pretty out of this world if that was to happen…

sorry for being nerdy but Im just trying to tell everyone the true facts since I myself am a student

Me Korean and I’ve just read this really amazing review, which, being in Korean, probably won’t reach most of you guys. So, me generous, decides to share its point. (you cheer here) The idea of the review was: this anime being as short as it is, it would have been very hard for the director to decide how to convey the sense of distance between the two protagonists. The magnitude of this problem is illustrated by the fact that the main copy describing this anime in the trailer was, “a chain of short stories about their distance.” The director, saith our good reviewer, not only tackles this obstacle marvelously, but knocks it down cold, by Translating The Period Of Time The Two Protagonists Were Seperated Into The Length Of Time The Boy Must Spend Stranded In The Train While On His Way To The Girl. All of you who’ve watched this pic have shared the anxiety felt by the boy when the train keeps getting delayed. What you feel there is the director thrusting upon you the emotional burden of years of seperation in a dozen minutes or so. A less sophisticated and more arrogant director would’ve done something stupid like use a long-shot, which would’ve only distanced the audience. What Makoto does here, on the other hand, truly moves the viewer. Don’t you think so? Look back on what you felt, and recognize the intricate mechanisms installed by the director that are behind them, and gasp in wonder. I’ve never beheld anything so close to Beauty in a long while.

the first episode of oukashou was awesome, the scene was set out perfectly and i must say the makers of oukashou should make more anime movies such as that.
i can’t wait until the next 2 episodes of oukashou to come out i am dying to watch it.
If anyone gets the last 2 episodes please tell me ^^

  41. 41 CoMa_WhiTE__ Mar 19th, 2007 at 12:13 pm

and JAY H, man u’re not gay , every grown up person would admit that this anime is romantic, nothing wrong abou that ;)

The part 1 episode was in fact streamed for Yahoo!Premium users only (and only for Japan too, talk about being selfish), so it is unprobable that we’ll get to see the rest before the DVD is out… Let’s just hope they get a move on!

If you’re looking for first-hand info (english language), check out this homepage: http://daike.hp.infoseek.co.jp/index.html
