Kamui Vol. 6 – Manga Review

After reading the action and plot filled volume 5 of Kamui, I was really stoked to read volume 6. I’m happy to say that this volume contains more fighting, plot, and even a little romance! And it’s not yaoi romance! Well, at least, not all of it…

Story:
The last volume of Kamui ended with Atsuma about to get the smack down from (Dr.) Yanagi and (Mr.) Hyde. Atsuma decides to fight back, and surprisingly does well. I guess he had some kind of power inside him all along.

Meanwhile, Sumire/Kojomaru find the sword they need, as well as some old friends. That’s right, Shui and Aika make a reappearance in this volume! Aika seems to have lost her memory, which just adds to her cuteness. The two of them need to escape the facility, and they’re chased around by guards everywhere they go.

Analysis:
I like to think of this volume as the coupling one. And for once, there’s actually a male-female one! After some Sumire/Aika, Shui/Atsuma and Yanagi/Hyde, we get some Shui/Aika! Shui and Aika make a pretty good couple when Aika’s memory is gone. That’s actually kind of sad, I guess. There’s also some more Yanagi/Hyde, though I won’t get into that. You’ll have to read it for yourselves…

There’s also a fair amount of fighting and explosions in this volume. I’d say it was balanced pretty well. I’m guessing the next volume will address what the heck Atsuma did when he found the power to fight back, and what it means in regards to his fight against Utsuho.

There’s also a special addition called “Kamui Academy” in the back that’s a sort of “what if Kamui was a school manga” parody. It was somewhat amusing, and I wish they used the same drawing style for the actual manga, but I’d rather read a real chapter of the manga instead now. There must’ve been a lot of inside jokes, because I didn’t really think it was that funny.

Conclusion:
Kamui volume 6 is another strong volume that advances the plot and finally adds some pseudo real romance with Aika and Shui. I wonder if they’ll ever revive Anzu, my favorite character in the manga…

Many thanks to Broccoli Books for providing me with a review copy of Kamui Volume 6. You can get more info on the Kamui manga at their official site.
