Mamotte! Lollipop – Anime First Impressions

My adventures in raw anime continue with Mamotte! Lollipop. “Mamotte” means “protect,” so this anime is supposedly about protecting a lollipop. Or maybe a (loli)pop? Anyway, here’s what I got out of the first episode:

Nina is just minding her own business, eating at some cafe with her friends. Suddenly, a red ball appears in her cake, so she eats it, thinking it’s a sweet. I can relate to this, because I was recently at a wedding where they had little plastic balls in their cake. I almost ate one!

Anyway, it turns out the ball is really some kind of magical item for a magic school’s scavenger hunt. Since Nina ate the ball (and it’s presumably in her body), she’s the new item in the hunt!

For some reason, a billion magicians start flying from the sky, and they all want a piece of Nina! Two in particular, Zero and Ichi, decide to protect her. The other two that appear in this episode, San and Forte, want to get the crystal ball by any means necessary.

The two say something about how Nina’s “just another human,” while Zero and Ichi seem to care more about Nina. I guess the rest of this anime will be about Zero and Ichi protecting Nina from the bad guy of the week. I’d be so happy if they were just trying to trick her, and cut her up the second they get a chance! Is Zero gonna have to choke a bitch!?

The character designs for this anime are average looking to me. Zero and Ichi seem pretty generic, as well as Nina herself. Forte is a badly drawn cowboy. San is probably my favorite character because she’s a goth loli, and she goes all XD a lot.

I guess I should note that they weren’t very original picking names for these anime characters. Zero = zero, Ichi = one, Nina = two?, San = three, Forte = Four…

One thing I noticed was that the animation budget already seems to be really tight. I think they reused animation from earlier parts about 3-4 times already! And it’s the first episode! And how could I forget to mention the superfluous naked magical boy henshin scene? I like my anime without henshin scenes in general; moreso if there’s boys in them…

I also thought the anime’s voice acting was a little weak in some points (Zero’s in particular). Perhaps it’s because I’m watching the anime raw, and I’m not being so distracted by subtitles…

The OP is a little too cute and happy for my tastes. Likewise with the ED. I think I’m gonna get cavities just listening to them…

Mamotte! Lollipop was a pretty easy anime for me to follow. Maybe that’s because every other word was either “Mamoru,” “Mamotte,” or “Mamoritai.” There were a few parts where I just had to get meaning from context.

The only part that made me laugh was when Zero told Nina she had no chest (Mune nai yo!). The cute parts are nice (like when Nina and San eat cake), but I’m not sure that they’ll get me past the rest of this anime. I’ll probably just watch an extra episode of Mamotte! Lollipop to make sure.

The reason they have to protect her is because she ate the damn thing and she can’t get it out of her unless they create a special magic mixture…which wont be done in time before the “magician exams” finish. (Apparently you need that red marble to pass the exams so thats why everyone’s after it). So they decide to protect her. I think the names Zero/Ichi aren’t their real names, they’re just their “student IDs” for the magic school.

Lol I love this show, magical boys ftw!

Hmmm
For some reason, I thought it would be possible to get that ball out of her by other means. I really didn’t understand why they fed all that cake to her, though… maybe as a laxative?

It looked like Forte was just trying to melt her or something… I guess I need to brush up some more on my vocab.

The evil loligoth girl said “Shes just a human so it doesn’t matter if we kill her”.
I’m not sure about the cake part, maybe just a random side gag o_o?

in the 2nd book zero and nina switch places and they have gym that day and nina in zero’s body comes out of the locker room and says there were naked guys everywhere and zero in nina’s body is in the corner of the locker room in a coma probably and 2 girls come up to him and he turns around and theyre half naked!!!

i love this show i watched only episode 1 zero is so cute ^_^ i wonder where his goggles went? he had them in the first episode but later on they were gone….is epiiosde 2 out yet?i searched for thee days for episode 2 but i still couldent find it…

I just saw the name of this book and researched it but it looks good i will get it but in the mean time has anyone heard of Pichi Pichi Pitch it is good!

I’ve just seen the first two episodes–the only two I can find right now. I really like the basic concept (despite the apparent fact that nobody poops in the world of this cartoon, otherwise it’d all be much simpler), and it definitely scores points for having one of the most infectious OP themes I’ve ever heard. On the downside, “tight budget” seems like an understatement; by only the second episode they were already asking the viewer to ignore settings by reusing animation from only a few moments earlier and a completely different location. I LOL’d hard at one scene that had some of the worst running animation I’ve ever seen. (Imagine a flipbook consisting of a single sheet of paper with one drawing on the front and one on the back.) And the battle at the end of episode 2 made me feel like I was lounging in /GIF/. The OP animation, however, has me curious about the development of the series, so I’d definitely DL the subs if they suddenly appeared before me, just to have a fun distraction while I’m waiting for my laundry to finish. Based on only two episodes, I give it a C+.

Where can i see it, by that i mean which website. I think the show is pretty good but a little childish. I’ve seen the first 2 ep in subed.
It’s so funny when zero says nina is flat chested and how badly she hurts him. I like the show over all though it has some falws. I like the still want to continue to see all 13 ep.

Can anyone! And i mean ANYONE lol tell me where I can read the manga of this Series, i already have the second series just not the first and the only episodes i’ve seen are the first and second. =( i really want to read the first manga so i don’t spoil myself reading the second one.

I personally prefered the manga to the anime, mainly because I only know a little japanese ^^’, but also because some of the characters looked totally different than they were originally

I don’t know, but i do know its not pearl. He does come in episode 13……….i think its just there. lol. I love this manga

hmm… ML (my special abbreviation of Mamotte! Lollipop) was an ok book. a little corny but im sorry to say i h8d the anime. i mean, michiyo kikuta is a really great artist but bad with stories and stuff. ninas kinda…. TOO much of a “cutie pie” thats kinda what makes it corny. plus, this story isnt as explanitory as it should be, there are lots of things that are confusing (maybe its just me)
