Since everyone likes “Top X” posts, and I’ve got access to a bunch of anime OPs anyway, I bring you the top 5 OPs of the Spring 2006 anime season!

5. Tokito Ami: Sentimental Generation

sentimental generation.jpgAlthough I don’t care for the yelling of the word “BOY!” (or whatever it is they’re yelling) throughout the song, I gotta admit, it’s still pretty darn catchy. I also like this OP because it’s unique. I think it catches the essense of the School Rumble anime pretty well. Plus it’s sung by a cute meganekko, Tokito Ami!

You can download the TV Size OP here, or get the single at YesAsia.com.

4. TEAM FAIRITHM – Senketsu no Chikai

senketsu no chikai.jpgSenketsu no Chikai, the OP for Magical Pokan, is sung by some group called “TEAM FAIRITHM.” Unlike the other OPs in this list, this one does a really bad job of setting the tone for the anime. The anime is about freakin’ cute were/vampire/magical/android girls doing cute stuff! I’d imagine this song would work better for a video game where you kill zombies or something. Still, it’s a pretty radical OP, so it makes the list.

3. Hirano Aya – Bouken Deshou Deshou?

bouken deshou.jpgAt #3 is Bouken Deshou Deshou? by everyone’s favorite tsunderekko, Hirano Aya! Although Asahina Mikuru no Bouken has its own special charm, I think Bouken Deshou Deshou is the better OP. The success of this OP is tied closely to the sequence of the anime. Whenever I hear the song, I get a mental image of the anime, (and Haruhi’s hair flip), so in that respect, it works. I dunno if I’d like the song if it were Glass no Kantai’s OP, though…

2. Shimamiya Eiko: Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.jpgHigurashi no Naku Koro ni is a really creepy anime. The OP is also appropriately creepy. The animation and music really help to get you pumped before an episode. Like a ninja. Now when I think horror, I don’t think guy with hockey mask; I think murderous loli with an axe (with this OP playing in the background). Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is a really good anime, and I think it owes a lot of its goodness to the OP.

1. Kawabe Chieco: Sakura Kiss

sakura kiss.jpgKawabe Chieco first impressed me with the inappropriately upbeat “Be Your Girl” from Elfen Lied. Sakura Kiss is also upbeat, but this time it fits with the anime. I think that one of the big reasons that I like this OP so much is that it sounds unique. Chieco’s voice really stands out among other singers’ (and that’s a good thing). I just noticed that all of the OPs on this list are from anime that I consider the top of the season as well. I wonder if it’s the OP that make me like the anime, vice versa, or both?

For me, the top three would go Higurashi, Sentimental Generation and Sakura Kiss, in no order. I greatly prefer the Ouran ED to the OP. They all seem really appropriate to the show they fit with, especially for Higurashi.

The Jyuohsei OP is definitely unique. I think it’d be at least in the 6 or 7 position. I don’t think there were enough good OPs to make a top 10 list, though, so that’s why it got the shaft.

I straight out disagree with the notion that Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is successful in any way to due to the OP. While the OP is good and the anime is good, I don’t think the it owns anything to the OP. For example, I had recommended the anime to many of my friends who watch casual stuff like Bleach, and one of them straight out skips the OP and ED of animes citing they’re ‘waste of time’, yet he loves the anime without ever peeking at the OP.

Otherwise, good list except I haven’t heard of Senketsu no Chikai since I didn’t watch the anime.

… this is someone who likes Bleach? Trust them not to appreciate atmosphere. That show’s a travesty, and your friends need to learn the meaning of “good.”

Urk… I don’t like Sakura Kiss. It’s too catchy, gets stuck in my head, and I end up thinking about it while taking tests. The damn pest. That aside, I don’t like the uniqueness of the song… it sounds too strident at parts. For example the “ima ga kanjin” line sounds like she really needs to stop straining her vocal chords for a second.

Of the OPs I’ve seen, I’d say that Higurashi wins out. I was looking forward to win from the successor of TRC season one’s Blaze, but no luck on the Clamp front. I actively dislike Haruhi’s opening (absolutely boring without the visuals, same goes for the ed). My top five OPs for the season probably go like this: Higurashi, Strawberry Panic, Ergo Proxy, Black Lagoon, Zegapain. I doubt the OP makes the show, because Strawberry Panic and Zegapain are far from great anime. I feel like in the case of Higurashi, where the OP is so dependant on the anime’s atmosphere, the show helps make the OP. In the case of Haruhi, where the song is plain ungood, the show helps make the OP watchable… but as a stand-alone song? :\

Damn, so few for Senketsu no Chikai? What a travesty.. although I guess it doesn’t help that noone’s watching the show

Higurashi’s OP would be next in line however. And at least that one matches the tone of the program following it

I got the feeling that this poll turned not into the Openings Poll, but yet again into Best Anime poll.
Come on, it’s ep. 7 and I’m already skipping Sakura Kiss… While Magipoka’s OP keeps playing as a background and not becoming a nuissance.
And 20% for Suzumia Haruhi’s OP? Obviously this is not right.

I can’t download the Ouran OP theme, it says ‘Internet Explorer was not able to open the Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found.’ Obviously it CAN be found because it plays the darn thing when I click the link. Are there any other ways of downloading the file? PLEASE HELP
