Garasu (Glass) no Kantai – Anime First Impressions

Recently, gg fansubs released this anime with the description: “This anime is so serious that it’s a comedy.” I figured then that it would at least good for a laugh. What I got was the humor of Suzumiya Haruhi Ep. 1, except that with this anime, it’s totally unintentional!

Things do start pretty seriously with a major space battle. A big group of identical looking (thanks to CG) warships are attacking some kind of aristocrat asteroid base! Did I mention this anime is really stupid? The wine sipping aristocrats surrender by shooting fireworks into the air (in space!?) and the rebels shoot ’em up anyway.

In the second half, we’re introduced to Michelle, one of the leaders of the rebellion. She crashes one of the nobles’ weddings, and generally kicks a whole lot of ass. But wait, it’s a trap! Michelle gets into her giant exploding greenhouse spaceship and blasts off! Just as Michelle is about to be captured, another bad-looking CG ship comes to save the day!

Here’s where I’ll list the stupid stuff that happens in this anime:

And the list goes on…

The character designs are pretty bad. Sure, Michelle looks okay, and I wouldn’t mind having a combat maid, but all the other characters are crap. The rich guys all look way too exaggeratedly dumb.

If the animation wasn’t bad enough, we also have my worst enemy, bad CG! Note to “animators”: it doesn’t look very good when every single spaceship looks exactly alike, in the same angle.

The OP and ED fit pretty well with this anime. That is to say, they’re bad. I guess when it rains, it pours, so basically everything having to do with this anime is terrible. The guy in the ED sounds like he’s just saying the lyrics, rather than singing them.

Glass no Kantai is probably the worst anime of the season (and that’s including Air Gear!). It really doesn’t have any redeeming qualities, beside the fact that it’s funny to watch it mockingly. If you’d like to see an example of an anime done poorly, be sure to check out gg fansub’s release of Glass no Kantai!

Haha! We all need to review a crappy series once in a while. Wow, this is bad. I have seen a few throwaway first episodes, too.

Thanks, this was worth the laugh. I won’t be touching Garasu…

Likewise, you’ve saved me time since the web site of this looked quite interesting at first glance. It puzzles me why animators use omg3DCG, since it seems to look godawful so much of the time. I don’t want my gorgeous anime worlds ruined by what looks like a Xenosaga cut-scene! I didn’t even like the slight CG aspect of Last Exile

Actually, if it worse and more mockable than Air Gear (:O), perhaps it is worthwhile.

I’d still say this anime is worth a watch for its crazy badness. It makes you apreciate the good anime even more!

Worst anime of the season? You haven’t seen Gun Musashi have you. That one breaks all kinds of records in incompetence. At least I’m enjoying Glass enormously. Sure the animation is a hack job. But I’m eating up its over-the-top melodrama and non-stop incongruities.

I find it pretty pathetic that some people judges series by reviews and not by watching it themselves.

Have to say you do have a fair point with the animation. Still give it a chance, I don’t know why but it’s captured my attention with the space battle scenes…which I love and are probably one of the only redeeming things this anime has..

But yeah, if your going to watch this anime be prepared for some dodgy animation, and as for realism in an anime…You’re kidding..right? Still you have a good point…they really do need to do some exlpaining as to the whole breathing in space thing..

Is Michel a male or female its confusing. I wish they’d say or at least show a feminine part of her.

Michel looks female, and up until episode 6 I had assumed was female. But all through episode 6 they refer to Michel as ‘him’, and ‘his’ brother even says ‘i have no brothers’. I don’t know if Michel is male or female now, or maybe GG just did a horrible fansub, who knows.

Oh well, only 7 more episodes until I can throw this thing into the Recycle Bin.

This is why we don’t judge animes based on the first episode. If you would have watched the second and third episode you would have seen that it’s a good series.

The animation is not the best, but I really did enjoy the battle scenes. Around episode 17 the animation slightly improves. This is series is not the most beautiful, visually, but it is really amazing story-wise. I am the type of person that loves D R A M A, which this series does provide. Once you get past the first episode you’ll be wanting more.

This series starts out pretty bad. However the main plot stories are pretty damn good. The leading trio (two protagonists and one antagonist) were *extremely* well fleshed out. I believe many of the disposable enemy captains we get to see in the beginning should not have been used at all, but such is life.

The in series music could be more adequate. The animation work is sub par and there are several inconsistencies, such as breathing in space, horse carriages in one episode then hovercraft in another, etc. But the tech weirdness does make sense: to a point.

Eventually, as you get closer to the end of the story, it is explained that the people are actually in some futuristic dark ages where much knowledge was forgotten and what we see are actually bits of salvaged old tech.

This is one anime which had all the basic ingredients for greatness but ended up short. Still, it does have its merits, I recommend it.

PS: I think the in series music does not fit well, but I do love the title tune “Tsuyoku Tsuyoku” by Mihimaru GT.

well, its crappy at the start, since alot of thing goes unexplained, but well,if everything IS explained, then why bother to watch the show? I found this anime interesting anyway. The artwork is very ordinary but i love the plot.

i love plastic tree! i only noticed this anime because i found out one of their songs was and ending of it. i’m still wondering if i should watch garasu no kantai tho

dot dot dot and cheesybagel got some points right.

People, please try and keep an open mind.

Firstly better not judge a 24ep series from the 1st or 1st couple of eps (especially when it shows signs of structure).

Secondly, who gave you any specifics about the universe the story takes place in? Better watch the series – it may tell you – and even if it doesn’t, do you really now everything about the worlds in all fantasy and sci-fi stuff you watch or read? Does it always need to be detailed even when that’s not the creator’s point?

Thirdly, anime sure is designs and animation but it’s also story, plot, character development and music. GNK isn’t the best animation/CGI you’ll get and certainly the op-ed are standard but it features a nice story, interesting plot and good character development in a philosophical context.
There are lots of trees in a forest and one should be able to see both each of them and the whole.

You like it? Fine. You don’t? Also good. Just try not to confuse what you like or don’t like with good or bad.

Whoa, these are just my first impressions, so they can’t really be “wrong.” Especially when they’re, y’know, on my blog, and my opinion? Anyway, I may have been convinced to check out the next episodes if the first one wasn’t so bad. Therefore, the anime failed.

I dont agree, my friend recommended ghost hunt and by the first ep I was ready to shut it down, but since I had invited my sisters along to watch it, I grit my teeth and managed to get pass the 2nd arc and the story picked up from there, and it got really interesting at the end where you were in pins and needles to know what happened, and now it happened to be my most favourite anime,

point is, some anime may start off as being boring but some do tend to redeem themselves the more it gets deeper into things,

but I do have to admit, the drawing of the characters are inconsistent at some points, the cg of the ships look like a kamen rider live action cg where the guy changes his costume and… theres the aristrocrats wearing big purple hairwigs and dresses, lol, well at least you have to give them credit to have the guts to start some wacky fashion even if it did fail rather miserably( its never a good idea for a supposedly highranking male aristocrat to wear a flamenco dress fatally equiped with a hand fan and sporting frilly tutu’s.

its not the best there is but I did enjoy it, though some key elements werent explained in detail…

oh.. like the ending too, guess you could call it a somewhat happy ending

I don’t know why you all think this anime is bad. It honestly isn’t that bad. I guess everyone have their own opinions but i enjoyed this anime a lot. People that haven’t seen it yet should check it out if you think it looks interesting, don’t let some review make you not watch it.

Where are the free download sites for this anime?

I’ve searched and searched, yet only found the first 12 episodes…

i actually loved this series. Who cares if it kinda defies the laws of physics? aren’t most anime in “futuristic” settings do it too? And also, the main reason that this anime is worth the watch is because of the interesting lead character that kept me watching to see whats his/her real gender.

oh yeah it’s crapp..how come they have carriages on the land when they have spaceship on the space..lol..they should have shown cars as well..so many flaws but guess what i enjoyed every episodes so far..and 21st episode is my best so far..

yeah. then animation wasn’t all that great, and physics and known laws of space completely don’t apply in this anime. but then again, since when have all the physical laws of time, space, or even matter all come into play in anime. there’s always some absurd thing that could never really happen. i sat through the whole series and despite all its short-comings, the story was actually pretty good. although, it only started heading that way after the first 7 or so episodes. all in all, not the greatest anime, but still one worth watching if your watching for a story and not to see if scientific laws matter.

just a thought, but has anyone been to another galaxy? everything we know about space is just speculation ultimately and things that apply to where we’re at. doesn’t necessarily mean is uniform throughout the universe. anyways, i know that sounds like something only an idiot would say, but like i said, its just a thought. our galaxy is only a tiny fraction of the entirety of the universe, and to assume its the same everywhere seems on the same level as asking one person a complicated question and assuming that everyone on the planet will have the same answer.

I think Glass no Kantai isn’t a bad anime… I like it, especially Cleo… After all, Glass no Kantai it has enough cool sword battle… ‘n the designs of the costumes are awesome… Unique… ’bout the storyline, yeah… Sure it less of cool… But still better…^_^
n its fantasy brought us to imaine more bout the space… The spaceship sure juz a fantasy, but it can inspired us ’bout ships…

hey!
it’s too much a crap to say about a anime of which u have watched only some beginning episodes
although i can say some facts and clothings doesn’t justify
but the storyline is very nice
