Anime How-To: Rip Audio From Video to MP3

Sanada Computer.gif

In my next installment of Basugasubakuhatsu Anime how-tos, I demonstrate how to rip audio to any video source and encode into an MP3 file. This is similar the process I use to rip the OP and ED from all the anime that I review.

I usually use a different audio editor, but since I want to make these how-tos accessible to everyone, all of the programs in the tutorial are free and open source.

If you find this tutorial helpful, or have any questions regarding it, please let me know in the comments section. You can also send me suggestions on future anime how-tos, since I’m always looking for new ideas.

On the Mac, if you shell out $19.95 for the “Pro” version of QuickTime, and install either 3ivx or the old DivX 6 codecs (not the newest version of DivX 6 with the separate DivX player) you can select just the OP in Quicktime itself, and do a Save As… to save it as a AIFF file. Then you can open the AIFF file in iTunes and iTunes can convert it to MP3. The trick is when you save as AIFF from QuickTime be sure to pick the highest quality settings.

Unfortunately, this approach doesn’t work for all fansubs (QuickTime won’t open mkvs at all)…but then again even on the PC, I can’t get VirtualDub to open most .avi files, it balks and tells me DirectShow codecs are “not suitable” and won’t even open the file. When it works, it really is easy, but I’m probably missing some codes or something.

im having problems with the virtualdub, what is the codec thing im missing? it says its missing a decompressor or something and none my videos will work 🙁

otherwise very halpful thanks!

it says it “needs a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video”

basically it says cant load XVID videos and then goes on to say wht i type dout
i know youre not a computer support center but if u have any solution please help! ^_^;; thanks

I try to do this, but whenever I attempt to open the .wav file I’ve created into Audacity, it never fully loads. It just keeps adding time to it, ect, ect.

I’ve been using audacity since mid june, and never had a problem with it, but for some reason I can’t get this to work. Any ideas what i’ve done wrong?
