Lemon Angel Project – Anime First Impressions

Lemon Angel Project is a new Winter 2006 anime that didn’t really get that much press. I thought the character designs looked pretty good, and I was looking forward to watching it. I figured it might be like another anime, Wandaba Style, which was pretty cool. Days came and went, and it seemed no one was going to sub this anime. Finally MahouSekai-Fansubs decided to give it a go. Was it worth the wait?

First off, I should warn you that I was really confused by this episode, even after watching it twice. I think it has to do with the random flashbacks and forwards, a la William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury. Minaguchi Tomo is a girl who happens to be trying out for the second iteration of Lemon Angel Project, an idol group. I can only assume that she makes it (otherwise this would be a really sad anime), and the rest of the season shows her adventures in the world of pop idolism.

Along the way, she falls down a lot, hangs out with her squeaky voiced friend Yuki, and dreams of being reunited with her long lost senpai.

I’m kind of split when it comes to the character designs. About half of them are good, and half are generic. The gothic girl and her cheery counterpart the glasses girl are well done. Tomo is sort of okay. The rest are fairly generic. I’m hoping in the next episode, megane girl gets some more screen time. If not, it’ll take a lot for me to keep watching this anime.

Another thing I want to note is the voice acting. A few other bloggers have already pointed this out: Tomo’s voice is really annoying. Not just when she’s talking, but when she’s sounding distressed and stuff. Yuki’s voice is also generally squeaky and annoying. Most of the time I don’t really notice voice acting that much, but in this case, it really stood out. For an anime about idols, you’d think they’d get better voice actors.

You also might think that an anime about an idol group would have an awesome OP and ED (depending on your opinion of idol groups). Sadly, the OP and ED are pretty generic. The OP kind of sounds like a level from Mega Man. The ED is sleep inducing. The song they play in the middle of the episode, "Revolution" is better than both the OP and ED. I wish they used it for the OP instead.

Listen to the OP: Angel Addict by Ryou Shihono, Ami Koshimizu, Miki Maruyama

Listen to the ED: Girls in Love by (I’m not exactly sure who)

Overall, Lemon Angel Project is not looking good from the first episode. The characters aren’t very likeable at this point, and Tomo’s voice is annoying. Why can’t they make the show about glasses girl and goth girl!? I might stick through a few more episodes just to see what they end up doing, but this anime has mediocre written all over it.

“For an anime about idols, you’d think they’d get better voice actors.” In fact, what they got was an actual idol. I totally and completley disagree (with you and a lot of other people) about the voice acting of Tomo (played by 24-year-old idol Shihono Ryou). Ryou-tan is a swimsuit idol who has been on TV quite a bit over the past year and now has two weekly radio shows, one for this show and one of her own.

Her voice is weird and cracking, yes, but has character and conveys emotion — if one isn’t hung up on having a smooth (perhaps boring?) professional sound. Koshimizu Ami and Shimizu Kaori are also in this show, and Kadowaki Mai is the short girl in the black gothic-lolita outfit. Some of the others are young unknowns, including glasses-girl.

Having now seen three episodes, this is one of the shows I look forward to. The plot could descend into banality yet, but so far the characters are interesting and the situations have a bit of pop. And Shihono Ryou’s is a voice that you won’t soon forget, whether you like it or not.

If you like Lemon Angel, then you shouldn’t care too much about looks or voice. If you like Lemon Angel, you should look for the singing and the plots of what’s happening around. Right now you’re reminding me of a post I saw on a sight my little sister was looking at for pokemon: “I think pokemon should have love in it, doesn’t Blah look cute with blah!?!?!? I mean, you have to agree with me!”
If you like an anime/show, enjoy what it’s actully ABOUT.

yeah, been going around anime forums..
seems LAP didnt get much attention.. all ppl was saying, it was juz an average anime.. n few of them commented bout Tomo’s voice..
As for me, i’ll keep watching this, coz i like the songs.. its nice.. The OP and character singles are out now 😀 .. Lovin It
hope MS-F will catch up with the subbing 🙂

Umm…what? I like Tomo’s voice…it’s deeper than usual (unless she’s nervous) and her singing voice is nice. Also..how can you go on about how generic everything is…when you like the two most cliche’ characters? The truth is…anime has pretty much reached the point where you can’t have much originality…I think you may be confusing generic with “genre”. Because that’s what it is…it fits into the pop idol genre. Though, I would say it’s quite different from other idol animes…she isn’t a magical girl. Or at least not yet, I haven’t seen the whole series…

people say that tomo’s voice is sqeaky and annoying but its not that bad and it has a nice plot. The first episode is mixed up but later its better(i already watched five episodes).

This is not a mediocre anime. I think Tomo’s voice is better than most becasue it’s not haigh pitched or overly hyper in a sugary way. Her voice can get annoying when she complains. But overall, it’s okay. The music, in my opinion, is really great. I just love the songs. Oh, and it’s Evolution. Not Revolution. Tomo has to be the main character but you have t watch it more to find out why. Their’s a lot of stuff about “goth girl” Miru, and “glasses girl” Yumi too. You really have to watch the anime more. And I fell in love with it from the first episode. But that’s just me. ^.^ I WISH MORE PEOPLE LIKED IT!!!!! AAAAAAAAHHH!!!

I really like this show, but I can’t believe that you said that tomo’s voice is squeky and annoying. I think they’re good . I like her voice especially when she sings.
and especially the designs you animation on how they draw the anime I relly like it .

It is a good show and Tomo’s voice is unique, not horrible and it is a nice change from the usual high pitched voices. Too bad the fansubbing is slow and no seeders for the raws :(.

I loved this show, and its characters! But i must admit, the first episode was kind of confusing. But i think Tomo’s voice is great! Its perfect for her char design.
